In the 1950’s four men wanted to make flying more affordable. They soon combined their cash for a down payment on an Aeronca Champ and named themselves the Bald Eagle Flying Club. By the sixties, they had outgrown their Champ and upgraded to a Cessna Skyhawk. During that time, club membership was a mere $10 per month! Over 50 years later, the club is still thriving and continues to be an inexpensive flying option for pilots. Today the club is the proud owner of two Cessna 172s and a newly acquired Van’s Aircraft RV12.

The Bald Eagle Flying Club calls Portland International Jetport (KPWM) in Portland, ME their home. With rates under $100 an hour wet, member pilots find themselves flying more often than before. Safety is a top priority for the club and two of the club board members also perform duties as maintenance officers.

To join the club all a pilot needs to do is complete an application in addition to one of the following four items:

Have a current member you know sponsor you – you may indicate the name of your sponsor in the application below.

Attend a meeting and introduce yourself. Meetings are held every third Monday at 7:00 PM in the Communications Center Conference Room at the Portland International Jetport, KPWM.

Arrange for an interview with a board member. Board member contact information may be found here.

Download and complete the Portland Jetport SIDA badge application – needed for ramp access. Application may be found here.

While several carriers will easily insure a club with multiple Cessna 172s, Bald Eagle Flying club discovered a predicament when they decided to purchase the Van’s RV12. They currently had their aircraft insurance placed with direct writer, Avemco, who would not add the Van’s RV12 to their insured fleet. It was time to find a new aircraft insurance route. That’s when the club approached aircraft insurance agent and pilot, Chris Wolbert of Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR).

Unlike direct writer, Avemco, AIR is a broker that represents all the major aviation insurance markets. When Chris shopped the markets, he was able to provide Bald Eagle Flying Club the broadest package of protection at the best available rate-including the Van’s RV12!

AIR insures all things aviation: from flying clubs (no matter the size) to corporate fleets and even balloonos! Most importantly, all the agents at AIR are pilots themselves. To obtain your aircraft insurance quote complete a quote request online or call 301-682-6200 today!

Kyle, tell us about how you got your start in aviation.
I was always the kid who wanted to be an astronaut. My teachers told me I had my head up in the clouds, but they didn’t have any idea how right they were! I was able to put myself through skydiving training by packing parachutes until my fingers bled, but once I finished my engineering degree I crammed my first few paychecks into a Cessna 152’s gas tank and the rest is history.
You regularly fly with your girlfriend, Tara. Why do you enjoy sharing aviation with others?
Flying with others is the best way to keep from taking things for granted. Little things like talking on the radio fascinate the uninitiated. It brings joy to all corners of the experience! Tara has been flying for a few years now, and even though she’s used to it she still points things out to me about the experience that I’m used to taking in stride. Also, taking passengers is a great way to keep from becoming complacent, as you find yourself worrying more for their safety than your own.
What was one of your most memorable flights?
My flight from Lantana (KLNA) airport in West Palm Beach back home to Frederick MD (KFDK) two Christmases ago gave me a run for my money. A 9-hour flight in my Rans turned into a 3-day adventure with 100 miles of Florida/Georgia beaches, sleeping on FBO couches, trading sandwiches for pre-heats and making new friends in aviation! Long distance VFR is always a challenge but that trip was one for the books.
What is the best piece of aviation related advice you have received?
An Israeli skydiving instructor once gripped my by both shoulders and yelled, “No more stupid!”
How did you first get in touch with your AIR friends, Jon and Victoria?
I first met Jon while taxiing past his open hangar in my 1st airplane, a 1/2 VW powered Preceptor Pup. I wanted to check out his Pitts and he wanted to check out the Pup! I met Victoria while she was making preparations for a women in aviation event in between hangars on our airport. AIR is fantastic because they’re pilots and they love their work.
Why do you trust your insurance to AIR?
I know that Jon and Victoria care about me as a person more than they care about my plane or my policy. I have no doubt that if I ever need to make a claim they’ll be more interested in making sure I’m OK than anything else.
Anything else you would like to share?
Being insured through AIR makes me feel free to enjoy my life in aviation! Just keep an eye out for those Florida thunderstorms.
Pilots Protecting Pilots
All agents at AIR are pilots or come from a strong background in aviation. When you call AIR, you will always find yourself talking to a person who is as excited about your aircraft as you are. As we did with Kyle’s Rans insurance and later his RV insurance, all of our agents at AIR will take your needs personally as if they were their own.
Flying Clubs have become an integral part of the aviation industry due to their ability to create an affordable ownership option for pilots. For over 50 years, the Octopus Flying Club has been catering to the pilots and student pilots of the DC Metro area. Recently, this flying club continued its growth by adding new aircraft and a second location in sunny Florida!
The club also allows modern online scheduling and 24/7 access to its four aircraft in two popular locations.
Octopus’s Maryland fleet resides at Montgomery County Airpark (KGAI) in Gaithersburg, MD. The aircraft consist of a Piper Warrior, Piper Arrow and a Socata Tabago. A Piper Archer is based at KHWO, or North Perry Airport in Hollywood, FL with more aircraft planned to be added in the future. All four aircraft come with IFR certified GPS and are meticulously maintained.
After that organizational meeting the Inn Flying Club, named after that very restaurant was formed. This not-for-profit flying club has been serving student pilots and pilots in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area continuously ever since.
Historically, the Inn Flying Club has owned several Cessna 152s, Cessna 172s, as well as a Cessna 182 and Cessna 207. Currently, they are the proud owners of an IFR equipped Cessna Skyhawk. Each aircraft that has been owned by the club is meticulously cared for by experienced members of the club. Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics and certified flight instructors are also members of therefore ensuring safe flying through aircraft care and flight training.
Join Inn!
A popular method for cutting aircraft ownership costs is by simply sharing the expenses. This can be done by getting a partner in the aircraft or joining a flying club like the Inn Flying Club. When someone buys a share in an aircraft partnership or a flying club, the annual aircraft costs are distributed amongst the group, resulting in less out of pocket expenses and more time in the air for the pilot.
The Inn Flying club is currently accepting applications for new members! Please visit here to read about the application process.
Flying out of his home base in New Jersey and headed south is airline transport pilot, Matthew Kiener in his Piper Saratoga. But this is not your ordinary flight, on his way home Matthew will have a special package – dogs! Matthew is the founder of FlyPups, Inc., an organization that transports at-risk dogs in high kill shelters and matches them up with a rescue or non-kill shelter in the north. FlyPups has flown thousands of miles rescuing hundreds of puppies and dogs from being euthanized. FlyPups has recently teamed up with an organization that trains dogs for service to veterans. Their fist trip brought eight potential service dogs from Florida to Pennsylvania. FlyPups is excited & honored to be in a position to give back to those who have served our country so heroically.
Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) knows the importance of the work at FlyPups. That is why each year we shop Matthew’s insurance with all the aviation insurance markets to ensure he is obtaining the best rates and a policy that fits his needs. We save Matthew time and money so he can focus on what he does best: giving shelter dogs a second chance.
FlyPups motto is: “Where dogs find hope, and people find friends.” On Mathew’s first dog rescue flight, he found his forever friend in a beagle mix he named Piper.
Finding a Home at AIR
AIR agent Victoria Neuville Zajko also found her four legged co-pilot through aviation. Victoria and her husband, Bob, rescued their dog Turbo in 2012. They flew to West Virginia in their Glasair to pick him up and Turbo has logged over 75 hours flying along with them ever since. He has been to Canada, the Bahamas, and many points in between.
Turbo quickly took to flight and his story inspired Victoria to write one of her own. With co-author Kelly Kennedy and illustrator Michelle Zajko the Turbo the Flying Dog children’s book series developed. Promoting animal rescue and teaching kids about aviation, Turbo the Flying Dog is best for children ages 4 to 8. Book two, Turbo Learns to Fly¸ will be released June 13th.
Officially founded in 1932 but with roots as early as 1929, the Reading Aero Club has been serving pilots for over eight decades. The clubhouse based on the west ramp of RDG does not resemble its predecessor at their original airfield which was dubbed by its first club members as the “chicken shack”. The modern day clubhouse serves as a location for meetings, social gatherings and a point of contact for aircraft rental. The area is bustling with the activity of 45 pilot members flying two flying club aircraft.
Reading Aero Club history shows the club starting out with two Curtiss-Wright Juniors, then ownership of a Travelair biplane and several Aeroncas. Today, two IFR equipped and meticulously maintained aircraft reside in the club’s hangar: a Piper Archer III and a Cessna 172SP.
The aircraft are available for use by flying club members at inexpensive rates for anything from day trips to instruction. Three member flight instructors are available for student pilots or for those adding on additional ratings. The flying club websites contains an excellent graphic showing student pilots the money they’ll save while flying with the Reading Aero Club versus a typical flight school.
The club has also been very active in giving back through volunteer flights with Angel Flight East, Veterans Airlift Command and Animal Rescue Flights. They are also involved in Reading’s World War II Weekend and Christmas in the air.
Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR)
Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) has been assisting the Reading Aero Club with their flying club insurance needs for over 15 years. Offering flying club insurance to clubs of all sizes, AIR works with all the major markets to obtain the best rates at the broadest coverage available. Obtaining a quote for your flying club is as easy as calling 877-247-7767 or complete a flying club insurance quote form online today!
More on the Reading Aero Club
Pilots looking for a low cost flying option, while developing new friendships with others who share the same passion for aviation need to look no further than the Reading Aero Club. With over 80 years of continuous operation, joining the Reading Aero Club is joining a piece of aviation history.

Scenically tucked in between Lake Champlain and the Winooski River, Burlington International Airport (KBTV) is the home of the Vermont Flight Academy (VFA). The Vermont Flight Academy Facebook page announces each new pilot as they earn their wings, showing the success and pride of this nonprofit 501(c)(3) flight school.
The School
The Vermont Flight Academy is the sole flight school in the state to instruct under FAA approved Part 141 rules and also instructs under Part 61. The facility has 16 aircraft from single piston trainers to tailwheel instruction. Also provided is seaplane instruction including the multi-engine seaplane rating in their Twin Sea Bee. For the bad weather days and for the aviator on a budget, the academy also has four FAA approved simulators on site, to include the full motion Redbird Simulator.
The Degree
Vermont Flight Academy has partnered up with Vermont Technical College to offer a Bachelor of Science (BS) in professional pilot technology. Upon completing this four year degree, students will have logged around 250 hours of flight time and have become Certified Flight Instructors (CFI). Started in 2012, the partnership between Vermont Flight Academy and Vermont Technical College has prepared many pilots for takeoff into a career in aviation.
Aircraft Rental
The instructors and Vermont Flight Academy will provide a check out in each new make and model aircraft a pilot may rent. Along with this routine check out, non-owned aircraft insurance, also known as renters insurance, is required. VFA recommends the minimum coverage listed below:

$250,000 for Non-Owned Bodily Injury and Property Damage Excluding Loss of Use of Non-Owned Aircraft

Half the fun of having a career in aviation insurance is talking to pilots and hangar flying on a daily basis. At Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) we do not make ourselves only available when it is time to renew or sell a policy, we love making new pilot friends and sharing stories about an industry we are so passionate about. We recently sat down with one of those friends, aerospace engineer Peter Rouse.

Pete, tell us about how you got your start in aviation

Both of my parents worked for Beech Aircraft. My dad worked for them for 25 years, and I have his gold watch that Beech aircraft gave to him. My mother is on a Beech Aircraft employee’s handbook from the late 1960s; she has her lunch box in her hand, and she is wearing a sleeveless blouse and cat’s-eye glasses.

I started my official flight training in college in the late 80’s, but I ran out of money. I finally was able to get my Private Pilot certificate in December of 1993. Over the years, I kept flying. I got my CFI in 2000, my CFII in 2001, my MEI in 2002, and my ATP in 2012.

Over the years, I have owned 8 airplanes. A couple of them were projects. My current airplane is a 1964 Beech B55 Baron. It was probably rolling off of the assembly line right after I was born. I am currently working on getting my type rating in a Citation Bravo.

Every year you join the Bonanzas to Oshkosh (B2Osh) migration. Can you share some more about that and other unique aviation activities you partake in?

The Bonanzas to Oshkosh (B2Osh) annual migration to Oshkosh started it all. It is a formation flight from Rockford, Illinois to Oshkosh for Bonanza and Baron owners. I have always thought formation flight was really neat, so I went to a B2Osh regional training clinic in 2009 and flew my first B2Osh in 2009. We takeoff in formation in 3-ship elements from Rockford and land at Oshkosh. I was over 40 rows back from the lead airplane, and all of the airplanes were running on the runway; it looked like the D-Day invasion. On that flight, I heard probably one of the neatest things in aviation on the radio: “Bonanza flight of 137, you are cleared for takeoff.”

After that first time, I started flying with a core group of pilots in Kansas City. We formed a formation flight group called the Beechnutz. We kept flying together and worked on more advanced formation techniques. I attended an advanced formation clinic in Grayson, Texas with some other members of the Beechnutz in 2011 where I earned my Formation Flying Incorporated (FFI) Wingman card. I earned my FFI Flight Lead card in 2012. The FFI card allows me to fly formation with other card holders in waivered airspace at an airshow. 2011 was the first year I was asked to fly in a showcase flight at Oshkosh. I was truly honored, as I never imagined that I would ever fly in the airshow at Oshkosh. We again flew a showcase flight in 2012. We did not get showcase flights in 2013, or 2014, so we are hopeful that we will in 2015. Since we did not get a showcase flight in 2014, I was asked to lead a formation demonstration for the B2Osh participants at our banquet in Rockford. I was privileged to lead a 31-ship formation flight with some of the finest pilots I know.

I also really enjoy being a flight instructor, because I always learn new things when I teach different people. Being a CFI has made me a better pilot.

What was one of your most memorable flights?

That is a hard question to answer. I find joy in flying a great approach, or performing a smoking rejoin. I am probably at my happiest when I fly with the Beechnutz, as they are great pilots and great people. I can honestly say I have had some of the best times with the Beechnutz; both in and out of the cockpit.

What is the best piece of aviation related advice you have received?

“Wind your watch.” I was told this by a retired Air Force F-4 pilot. It means that when you feel yourself getting task saturated, slow down. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying you need a little more time to get set up for an approach, doing a go-around, or landing and waiting out the weather when things do not look right. Too many times we allow ourselves to get into a bad situation due to external, or more often, internal pressures; the accident statistics bear this out. If it didn’t happen, then the phrase “get-home-itis” wouldn’t exist.

How did you first get in touch with your AIR agent and now friend, Jon Harden? Why do you trust your insurance to AIR?

I met Jon through a mutual friend. Jon has been my agent, and my friend, since 2000. The reason I stay with Jon is that he is a good and decent man who works hard to get the best deal for his customers. His employees are the same way. I have stayed with Jon over the years because he has my trust and respect, and that is not something that cannot be bought.

The pilot community offers a variety of individuals from all walks of life, each have their own story and offer something unique to the aviation industry.
Pete also told us, “I can remember being asked when I was very young what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I answered ‘a pilot.’ Now I am a pilot, but the jury is still out on whether or not I grew up.”
Was this a dream of yours as a child? Are you ‘grown up’ now?

Founded by Geoff Orlandi in the fall of 2012 with the mission to enhance other’s lives through aviation, the Orlandi Flight Center offers flight instruction, aircraft rental and scenic tours in the Blairstown, NJ area.
In 2013 and 2014, the Orlandi Flight Center received the AOPA Flight Training Excellence award for providing superior instruction. Orlandi Flight Center was the only school in the northeast region where both the flight school and an individual instructor (Geoff Orlandi) received this honor. The flight school offers any training a pilot would need, from introductory flights or sport pilot or private pilot certification to commercial pilots and ATPs. If you are looking for an instrument rating, multi-engine rating, tail wheel endorsement, or just a flight review, Orlandi has you covered.
The Orlandi fleet consists of 1947 Piper J3 Cub as well as a 1969 Cessna 172. Adding to the Orlandi repertoire is a Redbird JAY Flight simulator available for the budget pilot in mind or for when weather conditions are less than ideal for training. The Redbird simulator is available at an hourly rate or an annual fee for unlimited use.
The Orlandi Flight Center entrusts Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) for their flight school insurance and flight simulator insurance needs. Each aircraft insurance expert at AIR shops all of the major markets to provide your flight school with the broadest policy coverage at the best rates. This saves both money and time, leaving your school to do what it does best…instruct and inspire future pilots.
Geoff Orlandi’s pledge is to “do everything I can to deliver the most rewarding flying experience available.” Just as AIR’s pledge to him was to provide service with integrity from aviation insurance experts.
It all starts with flight schools in the general aviation industry.
