It is summer and the perfect time to take to the skies and travel! Perhaps your flights for the season include a fly-in or two. It feels like almost every weekend there is a new poker run, pancake breakfast, or aviation event to visit! As fun as flying to the destination may be, it’s important to keep your head on a swivel and to plan properly for the flight.

The Code of Federal Aviation Regulations requires you to become familiar with all available information concerning that flight. Larger fly-ins such as Sun ‘n Fun and EAA AirVenture/Oshkosh always have specific NOTAMS (Notice to Airmen) to follow for arrival and departure for these popular events. Be aware that even the smallest of fly-ins may issue NOTAMS or other procedures as well; especially if the airport is not used to supporting additional traffic! Review these procedures before your flight and it never hurts to chair fly the more complicated ones as well. Often a NOTAM may note specific landmarks to follow and online maps with satellite view are an excellent way to get an advanced look at the area you’ll be flying.

While the NOTAMS are designed to allow safe entry and exit within a busy airport environment, it is important to use a vital tool in the aircraft – your eyes! ‘See and avoid’ is one of the most basic yet important concepts of collision avoidance in aviation (as weather permits). A pilot should develop a scan that allows them to double check their instrument readings and/or NOTAMS with what they see outside the aircraft in a quick manner while also scanning for nearby traffic.

Your ears can also be a helpful tool. Listening to the radio and what controllers are assigning or points pilots are reporting can assist in painting a picture of the sky surrounding you (situational awareness). Even though large fly-ins such as Sun ‘n Fun and Oshkosh require radio silence of its pilots, listening to who is cleared ahead and their instructions will offer insight on what to expect.

Finally, it’s important to be where you are expected to be. Traffic patterns have specific entry procedures and required altitudes and a fly-in NOTAM may request you start your inbound leg towards the airport over a certain landmark. Straying from what is considered procedure or requested could cause a traffic conflict.

The agents and pilots of Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) enjoy attending fly-ins all over the country throughout the year and encourage you to do the same. To keep aviation safe and insurance rates low, it is important each of us take our flying seriously, especially during a busy fly-in season through preparation and keeping our heads on a swivel. To obtain your competitive aviation insurance quote call AIR today at 301-682-6200, complete an online quote request, or visit us at a fly-in!

Oshkosh, WI June 24, 2017 – Leading aircraft insurance broker, Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR), announced today the results of the 2nd annual “Get into the AIR” aviation scholarship. AIR received applications from pilots and student pilots from all walks of life, each with remarkable stories. Only one scholarship was slated for 2017, however, two very deserving individuals stood out prompting AIR to reward two scholarships this year.

Fascinated by aircraft from the World War II era since an early age, student pilot Heather Geer plans to follow in the footsteps of her idols, the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots). To reach her dream of becoming a warbird pilot, she plans to gain hours and experience by becoming a tailwheel instructor. Heather plans to complete her private pilot certificate by this October. In her spare time she can be found volunteering with the Bravo 369 Foundation, a non-profit focused on STEM education, aviation history and aircraft preservation.

For the last decade, Chelsea Dorman could be found at the oldest continuously operating airport in the world, College Park Airport, guiding future young aviators on the history of aviation. As the College Park Airport Museum’s program coordinator, she has overseen many aviation centric events from lecture programs, to happy hours and community outreach. With the help of the Get into the AIR scholarship and saving her earnings as a figure skating coach in the winter, Chelsea will soon be on her way to becoming a pilot herself!

Get into the Air Scholarship – Chelsea Dorman

Applicants were judged on essays and recommendations letters that best portrayed the pilot’s goals, drive, and commitment to the aviation industry. While competition was fierce, AIR could not be happier with rewarding these two dedicated individuals. The Get into the AIR aviation scholarship will be available again in 2018.

More than 500,000 attendees and more than 10,000 aircraft from more than 60 countries flocked to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to gaze upon the 2,341 show planes, visit the record 821 commercial exhibitors, and enjoy the numerous shows.
“People come to Oshkosh for their own individual reasons, and there was a nearly unlimited supply of unique experiences throughout the grounds,” said EAA Chairman Jack Pelton. “We also received reports that many exhibitors had record sales, showing renewed optimism and enthusiasm in the aviation community.”
As one of those exhibitors, we can assure you that we had a great time in Oshkosh!
“This year’s Oshkosh had the best weather ever,” said Chris Wolbert, Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) vice president. “It was great to get out and view the latest products and services available.”
The AIR crew even got to sit down and reminisce with Herbie from Herbie’s Acee Deucee Bar, a historic neighbor bar in Oshkosh now in its 3rd generation of ownership. Acee Deucee has hosted Jimmy Leeward, Danny Clisham and the other Airshow performers for over 30 years.
Herbie recalled the first time he met Jimmy. The performer called down at 1 am for some pizza and drinks to be sent up to the Pioneer Inn. Everything else in town was closed, but Herbie hooked Jimmy up with some pizza and beverages. The following year, Jimmy and the other Airshow performers started coming to the Acee Duecee. Herbie would keep the bar open for them every night during EAA AirVenture.
A legend was born.
And that was just the beginning or AIR’s adventures in Oshkosh. AIR regional manager Jon Shimer had the opportunity to perform with Greg Koontz, who has been performing in airshows since 1974.
“I was privileged to perform in the comedy routine with Greg Koontz on Thursday,” recalled Jon.
It gets harder and harder to leave Oshkosh every year. Now we have to wait almost an entire year for EAA AirVenture 2014. We can’t wait!
“There are some big aviation anniversaries next year, including the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I and the 75th anniversary of the jet engine,” said Pelton. “In addition, volunteers will build an airplane in seven days with the ‘One-Week Wonder’ project in which attendees can participate. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oshkosh, WI – July 24, 2013 – Year after year, friends come back to EAA AirVenture to share their love for aviation. Some friends have just started in this new tradition and others have been doing it since AirVenture’s inception.
Our friends Jeff “Rocco” Emanuel and Jeff Barrette have been a staple at Oshkosh for many years and never leave without paying a visit to Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR) in Building A, Booth 1141. Dubbed the “AIR-Bros” by their friends at AIR, the hangar chat quickly turned to a lasting friendship. Later, the two best friends would become AIR’s favorite ad on the back cover of Aviators Hot Line.

While discussing how many insurance companies often focus on free hats and giveaways instead of quality customer service, AIR remembered one of their favorite photos of the AIR-Bros wearing hats donned with collectable windsocks and pins. This fun photo quickly became a new backdrop at their Oshkosh booth and a new ad.

AIR will host an AIR-Bros autograph session on Monday, July 29th at 11:30AM at their booth in Building A, #1141. Everyone is welcome to bring their copy of Aviators Hot Line for the Bros to sign.
